Jeff Belanger joined host John Hyatt for his recent Gifts of the Wyrd podcast to talk The Fright Before Christmas. >Thump< >Thump< Is that the sound of reindeer hooves on the rooftop? A knock at the door for a surprise appearance from Santa Clause to bring gifts? Maaaayyybe. Or maybe it's Père Fouettard, Belsnickel, or Sinterklaas with his chimney Piets arriving to punish the naughty. Perhaps Krampus, Gryla, the Yule Cat or Yule Lads, or the Mari Lwyd to take you away or kill you for venturing out in the cold, harsh, dark winter. Step in to the dark roots of Christmas with The Fright Before Christmas author Jeff Belanger. From shapeshifters to mountain trolls, to elves, to heavy-handed cohorts of Saint Nicholas, the Christmas holiday has been filled with ghosts and monsters ready to dole out punishment to those who need it. The Winter Solstice is a time to be afraid. You can listen to the episode here:

Jeff Belanger joined GBH’s All Things Considered host Arun Rath on the radio to discuss the weird. In the town of Westford, Massachusetts, as far back as the mid-19th century, locals discovered a stone carving on a rock face that appeared to show a figure of a person. They debated whether it was carved long ago by Native Americans or more recently by local kids. It remained a local curiosity until the late 1930s, when a researcher looking for evidence of Viking expeditions to America paid a visit to Westford and declared the figure was a European-style sword. Of course, when talking about Massachusetts legends, myths and folklore, there’s no better person to turn to than Jeff Belanger, folklore expert and host of the New England Legends podcast. He joined GBH’s All Things Considered host Arun Rath for a closer look at the Westford Knight. What follows is a lightly edited transcript. Congratulations to my friend Richard Estep on the publication of his latest book: In Search of Demons: Historic Cases and Firsthand Experiences from Experts and Skeptics Alikee! I’m honored to have been interviewed for the book along with many others in the field. Estep’s book covers some of the most famous cases of demonic activity including the story behind the hit horror book and film The Exorcist. This is a proper and object examination of the subject. Highly recommended. I took this photo just before I walked into the church behind me so I could sit down and read it in my favorite pew. Just as I entered the church, Richard’s book burst into flames. If that ain’t a church-bell-ringing endorsement I don’t know what is.
