I was shocked to see my three favorite writing books listed. I read both “On Writing” and “Elecments of Style,” multiple times.

Thanks for taking the time to give some great advice. I worked as an editorial assistant for Gatehouse Media for over three years before being let go due to the bad economy. Now I write website content for oDesk.com – but writing is my joy, so hopefully, one of these days, I’ll write a book.

Still, excellent advice for anyone getting into the difficult world of books and publishing. But I’ve learned one thing: if you have a good idea and any skill as a writer, having self-published doesn’t mean an automatic death sentence to a career. Through some miracle, I did find a publisher.

But otherwise, as a general rule, listen to Jeff, everyone.

I have, in fact, shot myself in the foot. Yes, it was out of frustration afer 10 years trying to find a publisher and dealing with people who couldn’t make up their mind. Hearing over and over that there isn’t a “wide-spread appeal” for your book when you know otherwise is frustrating. Yes, haste does make waste. A first book put together when you know in your heart of hearts isn’t your top-notch work leads to an inevitable black eye.

Yet I’m too stubborn to give up and play dead.

Chris Woodyard really enjoyed my work. She made it with her own self-published book. Of course, the road wasn’t easy. I know I should’ve held out longer, but you can’t change actions that have already been done. I know first-hand the difficulties of distribution and marketing with an independent book. Still, practice does make perfect. Redemption can be achieved.

I am glad to see that you’ve gone so far, though! And no, I’m none of those 3 categories… though I do think I will become a regular viewer…

I will definitely take your advice on book proposals. I am almost finished with my book, but I think I will wait to finish it. Hopefully I can get a bite on it if I do a proposal first. My husband and I were in your Encyclopedia of Haunted Places. It is a wonderful book, as were the other books by you that I have in my paranormal library. I must say that I enjoy your books on the paranormal immensely, and my lifelong dream is to have one book of my own published. Just one- that would make me happy! So, we’ll see.

Thanks again for all you do, and I hope you have a wonderful Holiday! Remember that 2008 is the “money year” so if things didn’t go the the way you wanted them to in 2007, 2008 will make up for it!
